UPS Serial Cables

Here are a couple of (fairly) common cables used for connecting Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) to PCs.   (Thanks to Clint Sare for the submission.)

APC Smart-UPS Cable (PN 940-0024B):

DB-9 Male
(UPS end)
DB-9 Female
(PC end)
Signal Name
N/C 1  N/A
2 2  Received Data
3 3  Transmitted Data
1 4  Data Terminal Ready
9 5  Signal Ground
N/C 6  N/A
N/C 7  N/A
N/C 8  N/A
N/C  N/A

APC Back-UPS Cable (PN 940-0020B):

DB-9 Male
(UPS end)
DB-9 Female
(PC end)
Signal Name
N/C 1  N/A
N/C 2  N/A
N/C 3  N/A
1 4  Data Terminal Ready
4,9 5  Signal Ground*
N/C 6  N/A
N/C 7  N/A
2 8  Clear To Send
N/C  N/A

* I've seen two different configuration, one in which both 4 and 9 on the male end are connected to 5 on the female end, and one in which only 4 on the male end is connected to 5 on the male end.

Here's a set of figures for DB-9 male and female connectors, as viewed from the pin side (not the solder side).
